Galloways Society for the Blind
Hands in Clay is a new pottery activity for older people living with sight loss in East Lancashire. This gentle, creative class provides a meaningful way for individuals to reconnect with themselves and others through touch, movement, and expression. Sessions create a safe, welcoming space where participants can explore texture, shape, and form without pressure or judgment, just the joy of making.
Galloways already hosts a similar session in Chorley and is now looking for volunteers to help out as session leaders or assistants at our groups in Accrington and Colne on a weekly or fortnightly basis, however support could be given less often to suit the volunteer.
Pottery is perfect for people with a visual impairment, as it encourages movement, improves dexterity, and offers a rich sensory experience. It’s also very social, helping individuals feel part of something again.
This role would suit someone with experience of supporting and running similar sessions. Training in working with people with sight loss will be provided to all applicants.
We offer a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of our community. Our team provides practical help and emotional sight loss support, assisting people in navigating the challenges associated with a visual impairment.
No specific skills required but an experience of supporting and running similar sessions would be ideal.
