Spring into Action
We run social events as part of our Meet n Match project - a friendship and dating agency, for people with a learning disability and autistic adults. Events are there to support people to make new connections and reduce social isolation. Your tasks as an event assistant volunteer are to help set up and decorate the venue, greeting people, taking money, selling raffle tickets, helping people to dance and socialise and most importantly, help people to have a fun time at the event, making sure people feel comfortable and are connecting with others.
Spring into Action was set up by Lucy Hamlin, Rachael McHugh and Dawn Vickers in 2012, after they recognised that young people with learning disabilities had limited opportunities to take a meaningful and active role in society. Options after leaving school were restricted to college, and then on to day centres.
Lucy and Rachael initially worked for a youth group for young people with SEND, and created opportunities for people to use their abilities, rather than being held back because of any disability. However thise young people grew up and found they didn't have many options to contribute to society and so Spring into Action was born as a way to continue working with some of the people that could no longer access the youth service, but to also offer meaningful opportunities to gain skills, take part and feel welcome.
We have a vision of an inclusive society where people with learning disabilities can fully participate. We are committed to creating a world where every individual, regardless of their abilities, feels valued and empowered to fully participate in life. Our focus is on nurturing positive, healthy relationships, fostering equity, and developing essential life skills.
We are dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals to access the community, build lasting friendships, and enjoy services that are friendly, fun, and enriching. We aim to ensure that people with learning disabilities have the same opportunities as the non-learning-disabled population. The objective of any work we do is to
Enable people to live their best lives by reducing isolation
Facilitate wider social circles
Increase confidence and independence
Provide skills and opportunities to volunteer or work
Improve mental health and wellbeing
We are an inclusive organisation from top to bottom, and pride ourselves on going the extra mile for anyone that comes into contact with our services. Ultimately, we want to ensure that the people we support in our communities are valued members of society, with a visible presence in all aspects of society, including social settings, volunteering and work.
Fun, friendly and outgoing people to support our event participants to have a great night out.
